Performance Lab

Performance Lab 2022 poster image

An opportunity to showcase your work.
Emerging & established dance, theater, and performance artists are encouraged to apply

The Performance Lab offers a platform to present choreography in a professional setting to a live audience. The lab is offered twice a year, and welcomes completed dance works, works in progress, and experimental concepts in collaboration with theater, music, and performance art. Each lab showcases 9-12 works. A post performance Q&A and reception with the choreographers and audience follows each performance.

Project Support offered by the Lab…

The Foundation manages all production, marketing, and ticket sales so that artists may concentrate on their artistry. Through this administrative support, the lab becomes a nurturing environment for choreographers, where their work may be seen by important decision-makers in the field as well as colleagues and prospective supporters.

If selected, creative project support includes:

  • A choreographic stipend
  • Discounted rehearsal space
  • Social media marketing assets
  • A post-Q&A reception with choreographers and audience
  • Pieces selected are considered for future performances

The number of submissions has grown over the years to over 70 for each lab. A revolving committee of industry professionals selects pieces based on their own merit and on the overall content of the show to ensure a well-balanced and inspired evening.

New Additions to Cultivate Your Artistry and the Community…

The foundation remains committed to developing relationships with select artists during and after the Lab performance. In addition to the project support noted above, the foundation is expanding its programming to include new areas with the goal of furthering our artists in their professional development, and in building a wider community presence.

Live & Streamed Performances

Due to the success of the foundation’s Talking Dance & Artists Talk Series, the Performance Lab will now be presented live and streamed simultaneously. Our goal is to increase the exposure of lab artists to our national and international audience through our YouTube channel.

Virtual Workshops

Designed to support artists’ creative work, these free workshops with industry professionals will focus on such topics as lighting and costume design, music selection & interpretation, creating a company and fundraising.

Community Engagement

Select choreographers will have the opportunity to work with community groups through teaching, lecture/demonstrations, and conversations. From children to seniors, your involvement in these engagements may provide these groups with either an initial experience in music and dance or perhaps a re-awakening of the joy of the art form.
