Choreography Lab

An opportunity to showcase your work.
Emerging & established dance, theater, and performance artists are encouraged to apply

The Choreography Lab offers a platform to present your work in Steps Studio Theater to a live audience.  The lab is offered twice a year and welcomes completed dance pieces including, but no limited to ballet, commercial, contemporary, fusion, hip hop, indigenous/ceremonial dance, jazz, modern, performance art, tap, theater dance, and world dance (specific to a culture and/or country such as Afro-Haitian, Indian, etc.).

Our goal is to present a diverse program representing a wide variety of dance styles and cultural expressions with the highest artistic merits from the submissions tendered. Each lab showcases 9-13 choreographers.

A post performance Q&A and an informal gathering with the audience follows each performance.

Next Lab: November 17, 2024 @ 8pm
Applications Due: Monday, October 7, 2024

Project Support offered by the Lab…

The Foundation manages all production, marketing, and ticket sales so that artists may concentrate on their artistry. Through this administrative support, the lab becomes a nurturing environment for choreographers, where their work may be seen by important decision-makers in the field as well as colleagues and prospective supporters.

If selected, creative project support includes:

  • A choreographic stipend
  • Discounted rehearsal space
  • Social media marketing assets
  • A post-Q&A gathering with choreographers and audience
  • New! One choreographer, selected by the Director of Professional Training Programs, will receive a paid commission to choreograph for the Steps Conservatory
  • Pieces selected are considered for future Steps Beyond and Steps on Broadway performances

Cultivating Your Artistry and the Community…

The foundation remains committed to developing relationships with select artists during and after the lab performance. In addition to the project support noted above, the foundation is expanding its programming to include new areas with the goal of furthering our artists in their professional development, and in building a wider community presence.

Live & Streamed PerformancesDue to the success of the foundation’s Talking Dance & Artists Talk Series, the lab is presented live and is streamed simultaneously. Our goal is to increase the exposure of lab artists to our national and international audience through our YouTube channel.
